"THE NEW YOU PLASTIC SURGERY"

Nevada Woman- Nov/Dec 2002

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons' (ASPS) statistics, the number of people having cosmetic plastic surgery has tripled since 1992. This increase in the number of procedures performed appears to be related to advancements in plastic surgery, new procedures, and awareness by the public of what can be done. It also illustrates the increased attention our society is focusing on health and beauty enhancements. The most significant increase in procedures performed over the last ten years have been in breast augmentation, liposuction, tummy tuck, forehead lift, eyelid surgery and breast reduction in men.

Board Certified Plastic Surgeons performed 206,358 breast augmentation procedures in 2001 as compared to 32,607 performed in 1992. This represents a 533% increase over the last decade. As many Las Vegans can appreciate, these national statistics are paralleled in our community as well.

For non-surgical procedures, the five most popular were chemical peels, microdermabrasion, Botox injection, collagen injection and laser hair removal. In the news this yeas, the FDA approved Botox for cosmetic uses in the face.

Botox is a medicine that paralyzes the muscles that cause wrinkling and aging changes of the face and thereby can provide a more youthful appearance. Although not permanent, this procedure has become quite popular.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), founded in 1931, is the largest plastic surgery organization in the world and the foremost authority on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery.
